fishing
In April I did a lot of fishing. Both salt and freshwater. There seems to be a pattern. I catch one bass a week and two trout in the foot long range each time that I go out. There have been a few bigger salt water hooks, but none have landed. Nothing too special there.
However, I've been catching some pretty odd stuff. One horseshoe crab, one mole turtle, somebody else's hook and line that looks like it had been in the water for quite some time and a jellyfish that was growing in the dark. And of course your typical garbage. On top of that, I've see two snakes in the water, a bunch of manatee and some ducks with a big puffball on their heads.
I think that the only really cool fishing story would be from last weekend.
Since Colleen's mother, aunt and two cousins were visiting, we drove our whole family over to have some breakfast before I went to play paintball with some of my co-workers. After breakfast I still had an hour to kill, so I decided to go fishing with Kai for a while. We walked out to the lake behind the hotel where Colleen's family was staying. There was a lot of grass and it didn't look like a very good place to cast. So I looked for the closest thing to a beach and cast my line.
As soon as my lure hit the water I began to reel. To no surprise, the line was caught in the grass. So I gave the line a fast jerk, hoping that my lure would break free and fly out of the water. Instead, I though I made the tangle worse. Then I saw a huge ripple in the water, where the lure had landed. I thought to myself, grass doesn't do that.
I knew that I had something. I pulled mt rod back and began to fight. After a few turns of my reel, I saw a large mouth jump. At the same time my phone began to ring and Kai began to walk toward the water.
I let the phone ring and go to voice mail and began to reel in faster. Kai stopped walking and began to look at the fish that I was bringing in. I landed it and let Kai look at it. He kept saying. Ish, ish.
I didn't have a camera, so I decided to call Colleen and her mom and have them look out the front porch of their hotel room. I needed proof that I wasn't dreaming. I unhooked the bass and showed it to them. Then I grabbed the fish with both hands and launched it back into the water. I couldn't walk up to the edge and let it go because of the long grass.
Kai wanted to fish some more, but I thought that a huge bass in one cast was just way too cool. It was better to stop while I was way ahead of the game. On our way back to the car I checked my voice mail. It was one of my co-workers asking for the name of the paintball place.
This time it's wasn't a good day to fish. It was really windy and cold. But Kai really wanterd to fish. So I put a piece of bread on the hook and let Kai drop the line into the water. This time it was a bit harder. The wind was making the hook go under the dock and it was hard to see what was happening.
It seemed like nothing was going on. So I figured that either the bread fell off or the fish weren't hungry. I began to reel in the line when I felt a pull. I set the hook and let Kai reel in his catch.

Then yesterday, I decided to buy Kai a little Scooby-Doo kid's rod and reel. He had one before that we used to play with inside the house, but it was all beaten up.
Later that day, we all went back to the park. We walked up the the dock and I squeezed a small piece of bread onto a small hook that I had tied to the line of the new rod. Then we I sat Kai on the railinf of the dock and let him push the reel button. The bread and hook dropped into the water, but the bread fell off as soon as it hit the water. The same happened the second time. On the third attempt, the bread hit the water and a fish grabbed the bread and swan away. I thought that we were going to have to give it another try. Until I realized that the line was loose and it was spinning off the reel.
I immediately locked the line and set the hook. We had a fish. I reeled it in and showed the fish to Kai. The first thing that he said was "ish, a ish?" That would be "fish, a fish" in Kaiuage.
I took the fish off the hook and let Kai touch it. He was hesitant for a second, but then walked up and touched the side of the little bluegill. While Kai was petting the fish, it shook a little bit and Kai was afraid and stepped away. I let him know that the little guy wouldn't bite as I opened the fish's mouth with my finger. Kai slowly walked up to the fish a second time. Kai watched as I let the fish go and it swam away.
I wasn't sure how Kai would react to a fish out of water. I'm glad it didn't completely freak him out. Today, when we're at the park, I want to see if he asks to go catch another fish.

It kinda works out pretty well. For a few months, I've thought of going to Turkey Lake park while on my lunch break and fish for a short while, but never did it. Now, since I'm in the neighborhood, I decided to go fish at the lake. I was all set to go on Tuesday.
I had all of my gear and was up early in the morning. I first had to buy some batteries and pick up some cash. It costs $2.00 to get into the park. I went to the bank and the ATM was broken. Not a good thing but still not horrible. I decided to go to Publix and use their ATM. Then I realized that I forgot my PIN. The bank had issued me a new card and changed the PIN. I tried three possible number combinations then my card was locked for an hour.
I went back to the hotel and went to a water park with my family.
My secind attempt was the next afternoon. Colleen had to meet with someone at Universal Studios, so I figured that I could drop her off, get some cash from her and go to the park. Everything worked out great, until Colleen called me to let me know that she forget to give me the cash. I drove around for 30 minutes looking for a WAMU so I can change my PIN and get some money.
I couldn't find one. Instead I went to another park and fished in a catfish pond. I didn't catch anything since I didn't have anything stinky enough to lure a catfish.
Next attempt, Thursday. I had cash and was ready to go. I got there and it turns out that they accept credit cards. I could have fished all three days but I never thought to go to the gate.
At least I cought this guy.

~18" and a strong fighter. :-D
